PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Listed below are some of the programs we promote for our members. Please take a moment to find out more about some of the great activities our members are involved in.
POWER HOUR
Designed to give members the opportunity to work on homework assignments, and have a staff person available to assist with difficult questions. Members will be able to use computers at certain times to participate in tutorials on different subjects, usually in the form of a challenging but fun game.
Power Hour is Monday-Thursday. Following are rules and regulations that our members must abide by:
ACT SMART
This is an HIV/AIDS prevention program developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the American Red Cross. The purpose of this program is to increase participants' knowledge about the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, help them examine choices related to health, help them develop the skills needed to practice and maintain HIV/AIDS prevention behaviors, and increase their comfort when playing, going to school, working and living with people infected with HIV.
SMART MOVES
(Skills Mastery and Resistance Training)
This year-round program gives information about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and the consequences of the drug environment. It also offers information about the physical and emotional changes associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Smart Moves gives training on how to resist peer and media pressures toward drug involvement. It also gives training in communication and coping skills to ease the stresses of adolescence.
PASSPORT TO MANHOOD
A program resource for promoting positive values and responsible behavior in adolescent boys. This invaluable program seeks to instill in young boys the values and moral compass that will assist them in their journey from adolescence to adulthood. Passport to Manhood represents a targeted effort to engage young boys in interactive discussions and activities that reinforce positive behavior.
LEADERS IN TRAINING
A program designed to provide teens aged 13-18 with job acquisition and retention skills, leadership development and a positive alternative to the streets. The curriculum features a professional skills workshop, facts and discussions of relevant teen issues, interpersonal skill developtment including conflict resolution and peer pressure resistance and valuable workplace experience. Rewarded for their hard work with prizes and field trips, this program is well liked by the teens.
SMART GIRLS
Smart Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls ages 8-12 and 13-17. Through dynamic sessions, highly participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
F.A.N. Club
F.A.N. (Family Advocacy Network) Club is a parent involvement program designed to empower parents, strengthen families and prevent youth from using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and from engaging in early sexual activity. It is offered to parents of youth participating in the SMART Moves program.
YOUTH FOR UNITY
Youth for Unity provides youth ages 6-12, teens and parents with a foundation of activities that will help them better understand diversity and combat prejudice, bigotry and discrimination.
TRIPLE PLAY
(A Game Plan for Mind, Body and Soul)
This national program takes a holistic approach to educating boys and girls about good nutrition, making physical fitness a daily practice and developing individual strengths and good character. In addition to components for the mind and body, the Triple Play programs gets at the soul of the Club experience -- the gamesroom. Each Mind, Body and Soul program component can stand alone, yet integrating them allows members to reap more powerful, lifelong benefits.
GOALS FOR GRADUATION
This program introduces academic goal setting to Club members ages 6-15 by linking their future aspirations with concrete actions today. In goal-setting sessions with Club youth development professionals, members set achievable "Know-I-Can" Goals, more callenging "Think-I-Can" Goals and yearly "Believe-I-Can" Goals. Members create an action plan with daily and weekly goals leading to short- and long-term gains. A comprehensive guidance strategy helps members connect their smallest results to their highest dreams. An encouraging recognition strategy buoys members as their successes are recognized and supported at every step of their journey.
MONEY MATTERS: MAKE IT COUNT
Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13-18 by building their basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting small businesses and paying for college.
KEYSTONE CLUB
The general purpose of Keystone is to create and maintain high standards of health, education, character and citizenship in order for teens to develop into responsible, productive adults. Keystone offers teens many opportunities. Those involved in Keystone develop and use leadership skills, and they contribute to the community through service and volunteerism. Keystone is also set up to foster an understanding and respect between groups and individuals. Teens also learn life skills and information for living a responsible, fulfilled life and to enjoy fellowship and develop self-confidence. Our teens in Keystone understand and participate in our free enterprise system through fundraising activities they participate in through local and national Boys & Girls Club programs.
TORCH CLUB
Our Torch Club is a small group of Club members aged 11-13 who agree upon, develop and implement their own programs and activities. Groups focus on developing the character and leadership skills of members. Torch Club helps young people make a successful transition into late adolescence by fostering positive self-esteem and personal growth, building listening and speaking skills, reinforcing academic endeavors and encouraging the development of conscientious citizenship. The program helps with the transition of pre-teen to teenage years.
